Drug class and uses: Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that is used in the treatment of asthma and relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

Multiple manufacturers have been granted FDA approval to market the 4 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg strengths. Before the release of generic montelukast, Merck & Co. was the only manufacturer of this product, with US sales of $3.3 billion in 2011.

Generic Name: Pioglitazone hydrochloride
Brand Name: Actos® and Actoplus Met®

Drug Class and Uses: Pioglitazone hydrochloride is a thiazolidinedione used along with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Mylan Pharmaceuticals has been granted FDA approval to market the 15 mg, 30 mg and 45 mg tablets.

In addition, Mylan has announced the launch of its generic to Actoplus Met® (pioglitazone/metformin) 15 mg/500 mg and 15 mg/850 mg tablets, with 180 days marketing exclusivity.

Before the release of generic pioglitazone hydrochloride and pioglitazone/metformin, Takeda was the only manufacturer of the products with US sales of $2.7 billion for Actos® and $413 million for Actoplus Met® for the 12 months ending June 30, 2012.

Drug class and uses: Atorvastatin calcium is a statin, a type of drug that lowers cholesterol in the body by blocking an enzyme in the liver. Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. has gained approval to make generic atorvastatin calcium tablets in 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg strengths.

Previously, Pfizer was the only manufacturer of this product with US sales over $5.2 billion in 2010.

Brand Name: Plavix®

Drug Class and Uses: Drug class and uses: Clopidogrel is a blood thinning drug that helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients who have previously had a heart attack or stroke. Multiple manufacturers have been granted FDA approval to market both the 75mg and 300mg strengths. Previously, Bristol-Myers Squibb in partnership with Sanofi Pharmaceuticals was the only manufacturer of this product, with US sales of $ 7.1 billion in 2011.
