Drug Class and Mechanism: Cetirizine is in a class of medications called antihistamines. It can be used for the relief of itching due to hives and the temporary relief of symptoms due to hay fever or other respiratory allergies (sneezing; runny nose; itchy, watery eyes; itchy throat or nose).
Due to Cetirizine's various uses in adults and children, there will be differences in the availability of select formulations. While all formulations will be available over-the-counter by way of multiple manufacturers (i.e. tablets, capsules, children’s chewable tablets and syrup), the children’s chewable tablets and syrup will continue to be available by prescription with generic versions anticipated*.
